What this search measures
The tool compares your geocoded point with the start-to-end line for each tornado in the official Storm Prediction Center archive. It includes documented U.S. tornadoes from 1950 through 2024 and reports the shortest distance to that line.
Early records are less complete, and some short tornadoes have identical start and end coordinates. Ratings before 2007 use the Fujita scale; later ratings use the Enhanced Fujita scale.
Sources and limits
Tornado records come from the NOAA/NWS Storm Prediction Center severe-weather database. Addresses are matched by the U.S. Census Geocoder. Map tiles come from OpenStreetMap.
