Six tornadoes โ two of them EF3 โ struck Canada's capital region on a September Friday in 2018. Dozens were injured and entire neighbourhoods leveled, yet nobody died. It became Canada's modern warning-system success story.

The Arlington Woods EF3
- A second strong tornado hit Nepean's Arlington Woods and Craig Henry neighbourhoods near dusk.
- Destroyed the Merivale electrical substation โ the cause of the mass outage.
- Hundreds of mature trees snapped in a dense residential area.
- Struck with residents home on a Friday evening โ warnings sent people to basements.
Why nobody died
- Environment Canada issued tornado warnings pushed to every phone via Alert Ready.
- The 2018 event was an early large-scale test of Canada's wireless alert system โ it worked.
- Basements are near-universal in Ottawa-area housing.
- Community awareness after decades of education.
- Contrast with Edmonton 1987 (27 dead, no phone alerts) shows the arc of progress.
The aftermath
- Multi-year rebuild in Dunrobin and Mont-Bleu.
- Hydro grid hardening investments followed.
- The Northern Tornadoes Project (Western University) used the event to showcase modern damage surveying.
- Canada now confirms far more tornadoes annually thanks to NTP satellite and drone surveys.
