What actually decides a snow day
Superintendents are not really judging snow depth. They are judging whether buses can safely run their routes at 6 a.m., whether side streets are plowed, and whether students who walk can get to school without crossing unclear roads. That is why timing usually matters more than total accumulation.
Timing beats amount
Eight inches that finish by 8 p.m. the night before often means school runs normally, because plows have all night. Three inches falling during the morning commute is far more likely to close a district, because crews cannot get ahead of it.
Ice changes everything
Freezing rain is the single strongest predictor of closure. A quarter inch of ice shuts down districts that would shrug off a foot of snow, because untreated pavement becomes genuinely undrivable and power lines start coming down.
Local norms matter enormously
Two inches closes schools across much of the South, where plows are scarce and drivers have little practice. The same two inches is a routine Tuesday in Buffalo or Minneapolis. This calculator weights your regional setting heavily for exactly that reason.
Why remote learning changed the odds
Many districts now shift to remote instruction instead of cancelling outright, which has reduced true snow days in some areas. Others deliberately preserve them. If your district has announced a remote-learning policy, treat the estimate here as the chance of "no normal in-person day" rather than a free day off.
How the estimate works
The calculator starts from expected accumulation, then applies multipliers for timing, precipitation type, regional snow readiness, district type, and day of week. It is a transparent heuristic built from the factors districts actually cite — not a forecast model, and it has no access to live weather data.
