The Tornado Naming Quiz — how it works
The Tornado Naming Quiz (also called Tornado Namer) is a free interactive tornado map quiz inspired by CityQuiz and Seterra. Instead of naming world capitals, you name famous tornadoes. Type any real tornado town or event name — Jarrell, Joplin, Elie, Tri-State, Xenia, Moore, Greensburg, Tuscaloosa, El Reno — and if it's in the database, a pin drops on the map with the EF rating, year, and fatality count as a tooltip.
Four regions to master
- 🇺🇸 US only — 41 tornadoes. Every US F5/EF5 in the modern record (1953 Waco, 1955 Udall, 1957 Fargo, 1970 Lubbock, 1974 Xenia + Guin + Brandenburg + Tanner, 1979 Wichita Falls, 1984 Barneveld, 1985 Wheatland, 1990 Plainfield + Hesston, 1991 Andover, 1997 Jarrell, 1999 Bridge Creek-Moore, 2007 Greensburg, 2008 Parkersburg, 2011 Joplin + Hackleburg + Smithville + Rainsville, 2013 Moore) plus notable events like Tri-State 1925 and El Reno 2013.
- 🇺🇸🇨🇦 US + Canada — adds Elie Manitoba (the only non-US F5), Edmonton 1987, Regina 1912, Pine Lake 2000.
- 🇨🇦 Canada only — Elie, Edmonton, Regina, Pine Lake.
- 🌍 Worldwide — all of the above plus Daulatpur-Saturia Bangladesh 1989 (deadliest ever at 1,300 killed), Ivanovo USSR 1984, Canberra fire tornado 2003, Moravia Czech Republic 2021, Birmingham UK 2005, Dolores Argentina 2015, Nobeoka Japan 2006, and more.
Three game modes

- ⏱️ 10 minutes — longer timer for tougher regions like Worldwide.
- ⏱️↑ Count-up unlimited — no time pressure. Take as long as you need to name every tornado from the index. See how fast you can complete all of them without the timer running out. Best for learning the full database.
Tips to name more tornadoes
- Start with the biggest names. Joplin, Moore, Jarrell, Tri-State, El Reno, Xenia, and Tuscaloosa are the household names — nail those first.
- Sweep the 2011 Super Outbreak. Hackleburg, Smithville, Rainsville, Tuscaloosa, Joplin, Philadelphia — six major events from one outbreak year.
- Sweep the 1974 Super Outbreak. Xenia, Guin, Brandenburg, Tanner, Sayler Park, Daisy Hill.
- Remember the older classics. Waco 1953, Flint 1953, Worcester 1953, Udall 1955, Fargo 1957, Lubbock 1970.
- Don't forget Canada. Elie is the only F5 outside the US — surprisingly easy to miss.
