- Anticyclonic โ rotating clockwise (opposite of typical Northern Hemisphere tornadoes).
- Anvil โ flat spreading top of mature thunderstorm.
- Anvil crawler โ lightning discharge along the anvil underside.
- ASOS โ Automated Surface Observing System. Airport weather stations.
- Atmosphere โ the layer of gas surrounding Earth.
B
- Backing wind โ wind that turns counterclockwise with height.
- Barometer โ instrument measuring pressure.
- Beaver tail โ inflow band extending from wall cloud toward rain.
- Book-end vortex โ rotation at the ends of a bow echo.
- Bow echo โ bow-shaped line of thunderstorms on radar.
- Bulk shear โ magnitude of wind change with height.

- CAPE โ Convective Available Potential Energy. Measure of instability.
- Cap โ warm layer aloft inhibiting convection.
- Cirrus โ high wispy ice cloud.
- CIN โ Convective Inhibition. Energy needed to overcome cap.
- Cirrostratus โ high thin cloud sheet.
- Clear slot โ RFD-driven clearing on the west/south side of a mesocyclone.
- Convection โ vertical motion of air.
- Cumulonimbus โ thunderstorm cloud.
- Cyclonic โ rotating counterclockwise (Northern Hemisphere typical).

- Debris cloud โ cloud of ground material lifted by a tornado.
- Debris signature (TDS) โ radar signature of tornado-lofted debris.
- Derecho โ long-lived widespread damaging wind event.
- Dewpoint โ temperature at which air is saturated.
- Doppler โ radar measuring velocity via frequency shift.
- Downburst โ concentrated downdraft producing damaging surface winds.
- Downdraft โ descending air current in a storm.
- Dryline โ boundary between moist and dry air.
- Dust devil โ small vortex from surface heating (not a tornado).

- EF Scale โ Enhanced Fujita Scale. Wind damage rating from EF0 to EF5.
- Elevated storm โ storm where updraft is above the surface layer.
- Ensemble โ multiple forecast runs to quantify uncertainty.
- Enhanced Skywarn โ advanced spotter training.

- Fair-weather waterspout โ non-supercell waterspout.
- Fine line โ radar signature of gust front.
- Flash flood โ sudden intense localized flooding.
- Flanking line โ line of towering cumulus behind a supercell.
- Fujita scale โ original (F0-F5) tornado rating, replaced by EF.
- Funnel cloud โ rotating condensation cloud NOT touching ground.

- Gate-to-gate shear โ velocity difference between adjacent radar gates.
- Gust front โ leading edge of storm outflow.
- Gustnado โ non-tornado spin-up along gust front.
- GFS โ Global Forecast System model.
- GEFS โ Global Ensemble Forecast System.

- Hail โ precipitation of ice pellets.
- Hail core โ center of highest hail concentration.
- High Precipitation (HP) supercell โ supercell with heavy rain wrapping around updraft.
- Hodograph โ plot of wind vector with height.
- Hook echo โ radar signature of mesocyclone.
- HRRR โ High-Resolution Rapid Refresh model.

- Impact-Based Warning โ tiered warning system (CONSIDERABLE, CATASTROPHIC).
- Inflow โ air flowing into a storm.
- Inflow tail โ cloud band pointing into storm inflow.
- Inversion โ layer where temperature increases with height.

- Jet streak โ localized zone of maximum jet stream wind.
- Kelvin-Helmholtz waves โ breaking wave cloud pattern.

- Landspout โ non-supercell tornado.
- LCL โ Lifted Condensation Level. Height at which parcel becomes saturated.
- Left-mover โ supercell with anticyclonic rotation moving left of mean wind.
- Lightning โ atmospheric electrical discharge.
- Low Precipitation (LP) supercell โ supercell with little precipitation.

- Mammatus โ pouches hanging from cumulonimbus underside.
- Mesocyclone โ rotating updraft within supercell.
- Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) โ organized cluster of storms.
- Microburst โ small-scale intense downburst.
- Multi-vortex tornado โ tornado containing multiple subvortices.
- MUCAPE โ Most Unstable CAPE.

- NEXRAD โ Next Generation Radar. NWS national radar network.
- Non-supercell tornado โ tornado formed by mechanism other than supercell mesocyclone.
- Nose โ leading edge of dryline.
O
- Occlusion โ mesocyclone wrapped by cool RFD.
- Outflow โ cold air spreading from storm.
- Overshooting top โ dome briefly above anvil.

- PDS โ Particularly Dangerous Situation. Tag on SPC outlooks.
- PIREP โ pilot report.
- Pulse severe storm โ single-cell storm producing brief severe weather.
- PyroCB โ pyrocumulonimbus. Fire-generated thunderstorm.

- QLCS โ Quasi-Linear Convective System. Squall line.
- Rear-Flank Downdraft (RFD) โ downdraft behind updraft.
- Rear-Inflow Jet โ upper-level winds punching into back of bow.
- Right-mover โ supercell moving right of mean wind.
- Rope out โ tornado dissipating into thin rope-like funnel.

- SBCAPE โ Surface-Based CAPE.
- Severe thunderstorm โ storm with 1"+ hail, 58+ mph winds, or tornado.
- Shear โ change in wind with height or distance.

- Wall cloud โ lowered rotating cloud below storm base.

- Wedge tornado โ tornado wider than it is tall.

- WFO โ Weather Forecast Office.
- Whirlwind โ generic term for any rotating column.
X-Y-Z
- X-band radar โ high-frequency mobile radar used by researchers.
- Zonal flow โ largely west-to-east jet stream flow.
