Tornadoes in Poland

Poland records several tornadoes most years — locally called trąby powietrzne. Most are weak, but the country has produced strong, deadly tornadoes, most notably the August 2008 outbreak across Silesia. Here is Poland's tornado story.

Yes, Poland gets tornadoes

Although far less frequent than in the United States, tornadoes are a genuine part of Poland's summer weather. The European Severe Storms Laboratory documents multiple Polish tornadoes and waterspouts each year through the European Severe Weather Database. Most are weak (F0–F1), short-lived, and occur under summer supercells across the flat central plains, but stronger ones do happen.

The 15 August 2008 outbreak

The most destructive tornado event in modern Polish history struck on 15 August 2008, when a series of tornadoes tore across southern and central Poland during a violent thunderstorm outbreak. The strongest were rated around F3, cutting long paths of forest and building damage near Częstochowa, Lubliniec, and Kłobuck. Several people were killed and dozens injured — a stark reminder that Poland is not immune to significant tornadoes.

The 2008 outbreak reshaped Polish public awareness of tornadoes and pushed forecasters and the media to take severe-storm warnings more seriously.

Why tornadoes form here

Poland's flat, open terrain and its position in Europe's summer storm corridor let supercells organise when Mediterranean warmth and moisture surge north ahead of Atlantic cold fronts. When wind shear is strong, these storms can rotate and drop tornadoes. Waterspouts also form over the Baltic Sea and can move ashore.
