What happened
On the afternoon of 23 June 2016, a violent tornado — later rated EF4 — tore through rural Funing County near the city of Yancheng in Jiangsu Province, eastern China. Striking amid heavy thunderstorms and hail, it destroyed homes and factories, downed power lines, and killed nearly a hundred people, injuring hundreds more.
Why it was so deadly
The tornado hit a densely populated agricultural region where many buildings were not built to withstand extreme wind, and where tornado warnings had little lead time. The combination of high intensity, vulnerable structures, and a dense rural population produced a catastrophic death toll — the worst from a single tornado in China in around fifty years.
Aftermath and lessons
