December Tornadoes
December averages just 30 US tornadoes per month - the lowest of any month. But when December tornadoes strike, they often strike hard. The December 10, 2021 Quad-State outbreak killed 89 people. December 5, 1953 produced the only December F5 in modern history. Dixie Alley residents cannot let their guard down in winter.
December Statistics
- Average tornadoes: ~30/month (lowest of any month)
- Average deaths: ~12/month
- Peak states: Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisiana
- Peak time of day: Late afternoon and evening
Why December Tornadoes Happen
Despite winter cold in most of the US, December can produce tornadoes when:
- A strong cold front sweeps through
- Warm Gulf air surges north ahead of it
- Strong jet stream provides wind shear
- Warm surface temperatures reach 60-70°F ahead of the front
These conditions can develop in southern states even in mid-winter. Dixie Alley is especially vulnerable.
Notable December Tornadoes
Why December Tornadoes Are Deadly
- Public unpreparedness - most people don't expect December tornadoes
- Holiday travel and gatherings - families in unfamiliar homes
- Cold weather clothing limitations - heavy coats and boots slow response
- Nighttime frequency - many December tornadoes strike at night
- Deep South mobile home concentration
- Reduced daylight - shorter warning-effective daylight
The 2021 Quad-State Catastrophe
December 10, 2021 saw an outbreak that killed 89 people across Kentucky, Illinois, Tennessee, Missouri, and Arkansas. Notable events:
- Mayfield, KY EF4 - 57 killed, 165-mile path
- Edwardsville, IL Amazon warehouse collapse - 6 killed
- Dawson Springs, KY - 19 killed
- Bremen, KY - 6 killed
The event demonstrated that December tornado outbreaks can rival late-spring events in casualty count.
Christmas Tornadoes
The December 23-26 period has produced multiple significant tornado outbreaks:
- December 26, 2015 - DFW area outbreak
- December 25, 2012 - Christmas Day EF2 in Alabama
- December 23, 2015 - Rowlett, TX EF4
