Does Indonesia Get Typhoons?
Almost never — and for the same reason as Singapore. Most of Indonesia sits on the equator, where tropical cyclones cannot form or survive. But the southern edge of the country is a rare exception, as Cyclone Seroja showed in 2021.
The short answer
The vast majority of Indonesia, straddling the equator, is effectively typhoon-free. Tropical cyclones need the Coriolis force to spin up, and it falls to zero at the equator. Only the southernmost islands, far enough south for weak rotation, can occasionally be affected.
Why the equator blocks cyclones
A tropical cyclone is a tightly organised, rotating storm, and that rotation depends on the Coriolis effect from the Earth's spin. Within a few degrees of the equator, the Coriolis force is too weak to wind storms into a closed circulation. Since most Indonesian islands — Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Sulawesi — lie in that band, they get enormous thunderstorms and monsoon rain but not typhoons. The same physics keeps neighbouring Singapore cyclone-free.
The exception: the far south
Indonesia's southernmost islands — the East Nusa Tenggara chain, near Timor — sit far enough from the equator that a tropical cyclone can, very rarely, form or track close by. This is the fringe of the Australian cyclone region.
Cyclone Seroja, 2021
In early April 2021, Tropical Cyclone Seroja developed near and struck the East Nusa Tenggara region, bringing torrential rain that triggered catastrophic floods and landslides across islands including Flores and Timor. It killed well over a hundred people and became one of the most damaging cyclones to directly affect Indonesia in memory — a stark reminder that the far south is not immune. What Indonesia should prepare for
Not typhoons, for the most part, but the hazards that strike constantly: flooding, landslides, puting beliung whirlwinds, and lightning. Those, not cyclones, dominate Indonesia's disaster record.
