What is a puting beliung?
A puting beliung is a whirlwind or small tornado beneath a growing thunderstorm — the equatorial cousin of the tornadoes seen elsewhere. Most form when a vigorous storm's updraft stretches surface rotation upward. They are typically brief, narrow, and weak by mid-latitude standards, but they arrive with little warning and can unroof houses, snap trees, and injure people in seconds.
Why they are so common here
Indonesia has abundant heat, deep moisture, and near-daily thunderstorms — ideal for spawning weak, non-supercell whirls. They cluster in the transition periods between the monsoons, when the atmosphere is especially unstable and afternoon storms fire across densely populated Java. Because so many people live in the affected areas, even a small puting beliung often makes the news.
Why they usually stay weak
Like the rest of the equatorial belt, Indonesia lacks the strong wind shear and clashing air masses that build violent supercell tornadoes. So while puting beliung are frequent, they almost never reach the destructive intensity of a Great Plains tornado. The danger comes from their suddenness and the fragility of many light structures, not from extreme wind speeds.

When a strong storm approaches — darkening skies, sudden gusts, heavy rain — move indoors to a sturdy building, away from windows, and secure or bring in loose outdoor items. If you are on the water and see a waterspout, steer away from its path toward shore. As with all severe storms, the safest place is inside a solid structure until the winds and lightning pass.
