Singapore has always been hot. The concern now is that it is getting hotter faster than much of the world — and in a humid climate, rising heat is not just uncomfortable, it is dangerous.
Warming faster than the global average
Singapore has been warming at a rate faster than the global mean, driven by both global climate change and its own intense urban heat island. Decades of dense construction have replaced greenery with heat-absorbing concrete and asphalt that soak up sun by day and release it slowly at night, keeping the city warm around the clock.
Why humid heat is so dangerous
The human body sheds heat mainly by evaporating sweat. In Singapore's high humidity, sweat evaporates slowly, so the body's cooling system struggles even at temperatures that would feel manageable in a dry climate. That is why the heat index — which combines temperature and humidity — often feels far higher than the thermometer reading, and why heat stress is a real medical concern here.
The wet-bulb limit
Scientists use the "wet-bulb temperature" to capture the combined effect of heat and humidity. Once the wet-bulb temperature approaches about 35°C, sweat can no longer cool the body at all, and even a healthy person resting in the shade cannot survive prolonged exposure. Singapore does not reach that theoretical limit today, but a warming, humid tropics is exactly where scientists watch it most closely.
What the records show
Singapore's all-time high of 37.0°C, set in 1983, was matched in May 2023 — and average temperatures, warm nights, and hot days have all trended upward. The change shows up less in dramatic new peaks than in a steady rise of the everyday baseline: more warm nights, longer hot spells, and fewer genuinely cool days.

Staying safe in the heat
Hydrate before you feel thirsty, take breaks in shade or air conditioning, and shift strenuous activity to early morning.
