The hazards, explained

Sumatra squalls

The signature Singapore storm: a line of thunderstorms that forms overnight over Sumatra, sweeps east across the Strait of Malacca, and slams the island in the early morning with sudden 40–80 km/h gusts, blinding rain, and constant lightning. This is what topples trees and floods roads.

Lightning

Singapore records among the highest rates of lightning activity anywhere on the planet, with thunder heard on a large share of days each year. It is a genuine and deadly hazard, and the country has built world-class detection and warning systems around it.

Flash flooding
