Singapore Typhoon Impact Simulator
Singapore has never been hit by a typhoon — and almost certainly never will be. But what if one did? Set the storm's strength and track and see modelled estimates for casualties, displacement, and damage in one of the world's densest, least cyclone-ready cities.
How the simulator works
The model starts from Singapore's real exposure — roughly 5.9 million people packed into about 735 square kilometres, one of the highest population densities on Earth — and applies impact rates that scale with storm category. Those base rates are then adjusted for three things that dramatically change outcomes: how directly the storm tracks over the island, whether storm surge coincides with high tide, and how much warning and preparation there is.
It is deliberately built the same way as our tornado risk calculator: transparent per-population rates rather than a black box. Because Singapore has no real cyclone history to calibrate against, the numbers are necessarily rough and should be read as orders of magnitude, not precise predictions.
Why Singapore would be uniquely vulnerable
Cities that face regular hurricanes build for them: wind-rated construction, evacuation routes, storm shutters, a public that knows what to do. Singapore has none of that muscle memory, because it has never needed it. A first-ever typhoon would strike:
- Buildings not designed for cyclone winds. Robust concrete high-rises would largely stand, but facades, glass, rooftop structures, and the vast amount of outdoor infrastructure were never engineered for sustained hurricane-force loads.
- Extreme density. Nearly six million people with nowhere to evacuate to — the whole island is the impact zone.
- Low-lying, surge-exposed coast. A large share of Singapore sits within a few metres of sea level, and a surge at high tide would flood coastal and reclaimed areas.
- No evacuation culture. Without decades of drills and warnings, the human response would lag the storm.
Working the other way, Singapore also has real advantages: sturdy reinforced-concrete public housing, a world-class emergency and healthcare system, excellent communications, and a small area that can be reached quickly by responders.
The reality: why this stays hypothetical
Tropical cyclones need the Coriolis force to spin up, and it falls to zero at the equator. Singapore's location makes a direct strike essentially impossible — the one time a cyclone came close, Typhoon Vamei in 2001, was estimated to be a once-in-100-to-400-year fluke, and it still passed about 60 km away over Malaysia.
