Family safety
Pet safety in tornadoes
Family plans include pets. Here is exactly how to shelter with dogs, cats and small mammals during a tornado โ plus what to pack in advance and how to find pets separated by a storm.
Before the storm season
- Microchip every pet โ post-tornado shelter separation is the #1 way pets are lost forever.
- ID tags with current phone number on every collar.
- Photograph each pet from multiple angles. Cloud-backup the photos.
- Assemble a pet emergency kit (see below).
- Practice the "get into the safe room" drill with dogs at least twice per season.
- Know if your community shelter accepts pets (many do not).
Pet emergency kit
Dogs
3 days of food in sealed container, 3 days of water (1 gal/day/large dog), leash, collar with tags, muzzle even if you never use one (stressed dogs bite), medications, vet records copy.
Cats
Sturdy carrier, 3 days of food, water, portable litter box + litter, familiar blanket, calming pheromone spray, medications.
Small mammals
Travel cage, food, water bottle, familiar bedding, hay for rabbits.
Birds
Small travel cage or bird backpack, food, water dispenser, cover cloth (reduces stress), toys.
Fish/reptiles
Battery-powered aquarium bubbler, thermometer, water conditioner. If shelter is planned, transfer to insulated bucket.
During the storm
- Get pets into carriers or on leashes BEFORE the warning. Cats especially will hide when they hear tornado sirens.
- Bring every pet into your safe room โ never leave one behind.
- Cover carriers with a blanket to reduce visual stimuli and sound.
- Keep pets calm with your voice; do not scold if they act out.
- Do not open the safe room door until the warning is cancelled.
After the storm
Post-tornado is when most pets get lost:
- Do not let pets outside unleashed even if the house looks intact โ familiar landmarks may be gone.
- Check for injuries (broken glass in paws is very common).
- Contact your vet before giving medications you found scattered.
- If a pet is missing: post to local Nextdoor, Facebook groups, and the local shelter. Include microchip number.
- Bring pets into a heated/cool area โ post-tornado power loss can be dangerous for small animals.
Livestock and farm animals
- Livestock cannot be sheltered. Best practice is to leave gates open so they can seek shelter naturally.
- Move mobile equipment away from barns.
- Post-tornado: livestock scattering across county lines is common. Coordinate with neighbors and county extension.
If your pet is caught outside
Sadly, pets outside during a tornado rarely survive an EF3+. But post-storm searches routinely find animals sheltered under buildings, in culverts, or in wooded areas. Search for at least a week before giving up. Post to state-specific "lost pet" Facebook groups.
