The practical difference

The Storm Prediction Center generally issues tornado watches when the atmosphere may produce tornadoes. Local National Weather Service offices issue warnings when radar or reports identify an immediate threat.

During a watch, review your shelter, charge devices, turn on alerts, and keep checking the forecast. During a warning, stop preparing and move to shelter.

Why both products exist

Forecasts can identify an environment favorable for tornadoes before anyone knows which storm will rotate. Watches communicate that broader potential. Warnings narrow the message to a storm and location that require action.

A storm can produce a warning without a prior watch, and a watch does not guarantee that every place inside it will receive a warning.

Read the map correctly

Watch boxes are broad outlines. Warning polygons follow the projected path of a storm and may cross portions of several counties. Zoom in to your location and do not assume the county border defines the threat.
