Tornadoes in Europe

Europe averages 300+ tornadoes per year - fewer than the US (~1,200) but not negligible. Most European tornadoes are weak (equivalent to EF0-EF1), but violent events do occur, especially in southern Europe and around thunderstorm hotspots like the Po Valley in Italy.

European Tornado Statistics

The UK Tornado Rate

The United Kingdom actually has the highest tornado density per square mile in Europe. The UK averages 30-50 tornadoes per year - most are EF0-EF1 weak events, but occasional stronger tornadoes occur. Famous UK tornadoes:

Continental European Hotspots

France

France averages ~30-50 tornadoes per year. Peak activity in central and northern France. Notable events include the Val-de-Sarthe tornado (October 3, 2013) and the Ephebe-Occitanie tornado (August 24, 2014).

Italy - Po Valley

The Po Valley in northern Italy is one of Europe's most tornado-prone regions. It gets 15-25 tornadoes per year, some rated T5-T6 (F3-F4 equivalent). The area sees supercell thunderstorms similar to the US Great Plains, though on a smaller scale.

Notable Italian events:

Germany

Germany averages 30-40 tornadoes per year. Peak activity in the North German Plain. Occasional violent events include the Neumarkt-Kaisheim tornado (May 24, 2010) rated T5.

Spain

Spain gets 20-30 tornadoes per year, mostly weak. The 2012 Extremadura tornado was a rare T4 event.

Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary

Central European countries see 5-15 tornadoes per year each. The 2019 Czech Republic and 2021 Moravia events reminded the region that violent tornadoes are possible.

Notable European Historical Events

The European TORRO Scale

Europe uses the TORRO Tornado Intensity Scale (T0 through T11) developed by the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation. Rough equivalents to Fujita:

The TORRO scale extends to T11 for hypothetical extremely violent events. It has more granular ratings for weaker tornadoes.

Why Europe Has Fewer Tornadoes

Europe's tornado activity is limited by:

Storm Chase Culture in Europe

European storm chasing communities are small but active. The Po Valley and central France are the main chase destinations. Notable European chasers include British and Italian meteorologists who study the region's severe weather.

Warning Systems

European warning systems vary by country:

Compared to the US NWS, European tornado-specific warning capabilities are limited but improving.
