Northern Rockies and Plains Winter 2026–27: Dry Signals

NOAA's northern Rockies and Plains winter 2026–27 outlook: warmer odds, northern mountain dryness, drought risk, and local forecast limits.

At a glance: NOAA favors warmer seasonal temperatures in the northern interior and drier conditions in parts of the northern Rockies; the northern Plains precipitation map has weaker directional guidance.

The dry area has boundaries

NOAA's winter precipitation map favors below-average totals in parts of the northern Rockies and northern Mountain West. The drought outlook suggests worsening or developing drought across parts of the northern Rockies. The northern Plains, however, are among the regions with equal chances for seasonal precipitation categories.

It would be misleading to call the entire northern interior dry. Mountain ranges, basins, and Plains counties sit under different probability categories. Consult the actual CPC maps and updated forecasts for the place you care about.

Snowpack and cold waves

A warm-leaning winter can raise snow levels or shorten the duration of snow cover at some elevations, but seasonal warmth cannot determine the final mountain snowpack. A handful of storms can contribute much of a season's accumulation, and exposed passes can have severe weather even during a mild winter overall.

On the Plains, a warm three-month mean does not rule out blizzards or dangerous wind chill during a short outbreak. The specific jet-stream and surface-pressure setup becomes knowable only much closer to an event.

Useful follow-up

Water managers and travelers should compare actual snow-water observations, drought updates, and local NWS forecasts through the winter. If dry conditions persist, the impact will depend on where precipitation fails and whether late-season storms compensate.

For road decisions, local warnings and short-range wind and snow forecasts take priority over the October seasonal expectation.
